Human Made Henley Navy Neck Shirt: A Piece Worth Wearing for Years

Human Made is made one piece at a time.

We’ve been making clothes in Tokyo since 2016. When Nigo started the brand, he said one thing: good things don’t need to shout. Every Human Made piece is made in Japan, and someone has looked at it, touched it, and confirmed it — from the fabric to the stitching.

This Henley Navy Neck Shirt came about the same way.

This Isn’t Just Any Henley

A henley has a few buttons at the neck. That’s its signature. But the one Human Made makes uses a textured cotton thermal fabric. It feels grainy to the touch and has structure when you wear it — it doesn’t just hang off you like a regular tee.

Navy is a smart choice. It’s less heavy than black and more interesting than light colors. If you’re buying your first henley, a dark color is the safest starting point — it looks substantial and pairs easily.

The embroidered Heart Logo on the chest is small. It doesn’t grab attention. The back print is understated too. That’s how we’ve always done it: when you want people to notice, the clothes speak for you; the rest of the time, they just sit there quietly.

Wearing It Is Actually Simple

How you handle the buttons sets the tone for the whole day.

Buttoned all the way up looks too stiff. All the way open looks too casual. Leaving one or two undone is just right — there’s a little breathing room at the neck without looking like you just rolled out of bed.

For styling, since the henley is fairly fitted, you can go looser with pants. Straight-leg jeans or relaxed chinos both work. Skinny pants will make the whole look feel dated.

When it gets cold, throw a Human Made jacket over it. The buttons at the neck show through, and you get some nice layering. If you want something more casual, a Human Made hoodie is a common choice too. Our T-shirt line is worth a look as well — same foundation as this henley: simple, built to last.

How to Wash It, How to Dry It

This is the part most people skip, but we take it seriously.

Before washing: Turn it inside out and button the buttons. This keeps the neckline from getting stretched out in the machine.

Water temperature: Below 30°C, gentle cycle. Hot water will shrink cotton fabric and fade navy much faster.

No bleach. No fabric softener. Softener leaves a film on the surface, and the thermal texture won’t be as noticeable.

Print and embroidery areas: Don’t iron directly on them. If you must iron, turn it inside out and iron from the inside.

Drying: Don’t leave it in direct sunlight. Dry flat or hang in the shade. Direct sun fades the color faster than you’d expect.

The fabric has some weight to it, so it won’t dry super fast — but that also means it’ll last for years.

A Quick Note on the CPFM Collab

If you follow Human Made’s collaborations with other brands, the Cactus Plant Flea Market “We’re Good!” collection is worth a look. The cherry hoodie is one of the better-known pieces from that line. The style is different from Human Made’s own stuff, but people who like streetwear usually pick up both.

FAQs

What fabric is the Human Made Henley Navy Neck Shirt made of?

100% cotton, textured thermal fabric. It feels grainy and has more weight than a regular cotton tee.

How many buttons should I leave undone on a henley?

Leave the top one or two undone. All buttoned up looks too stiff, all the way open looks too casual.

Does Human Made run big or small?

Standard fit. If you’re between S and M, go by the size you normally wear in a Human Made T-shirt. The henley fabric has some thickness, so it won’t stretch out like a regular cotton tee after a few wears.

Can I machine wash it?

Yes. Turn it inside out, button the buttons, and use a gentle cycle below 30°C. No bleach, no direct sunlight.

Does Human Made make women’s sizes?

Human Made’s line covers both men’s and women’s. The Henley Neck Shirt has a fairly unisex fit — women usually fit an S or M.

Will navy fade easily?

Not with normal washing and shade drying. Navy is a stable color — softer than black, more forgiving than light colors. Just avoid hot water and direct sun.

What season is this good for?

The fabric has some weight, so it works well on its own in fall and as a layer in winter. You can wear it in spring too, but it’ll be too warm for summer.
